Larry N. Carwell
Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Larry N. Carwell of the Houston District Office, died on January 9, 1984, in a helicopter crash during an operations flight near the Bahamas. He was 39 years of age at the time of his death. During the 1980's the Bahamas was a critical link in the cocaine smuggling chain that stretched from Colombia to the United States. DEA agents were assigned to the Caribbean in an effort to reduce drug trafficking activities in that area. Special Agent Carwell joined the DEA in May 1974. During his 10 years in Houston, he was very active in drug prevention programs and had worked closely with Houston area sports teams to raise awareness about drug abuse. After his death, Special Agent Carwell received the International Narcotic Enforcement Officers Association's Medal of Valor in October 1984 "for having performed his duty at a personal risk of life."

Larry was one of our Class Counselors during DEA Basic Agent Class 17 in Wash DC in 1980. He was a very good man and quickly earned the respect of our entire class as well as our friendship. He set the example as our Mentor and what a DEA Special Agent should be with his humility easy smile and willingness to go the extra mile. His tragic death while conducting drug interdictions in the Bahamas impacted all who knew him greatly and left a huge void within the DEA family. I was Larry's first partner when he arrived at DEA, Houston in 1974. There was no finer SA or man than Larry. He always had a smile, good humor and was always a good friend. It's been 30 years and I still think of him and would love to have one more conversation. Larry was a Christian, a good man of faith and he loved his family. — Michael D. Conway
